Boycott Steak and Shake

UPDATE AND FOLLOW UP HERE

I was reading Wendy’s post this morning about how she is standing up for a fellow mommy blogger against the company Steak and Shake.  Her good friend Karen aka deaf mom, was refused service at Steak & Shake when trying to order through the take out window.  Karen explained that she is deaf and can’t hear the drive thru speaker and the STILL DENIED her service!  Can you freakin’ believe that!?  ABSOLUTELY ridiculous!!

So, I’m joined Wendy and others in boycotting the A-HOLES Steak & Shake!  Please help spread the news.

I refuse to eat at Steak and Shake until Karen Putz gets an apology from the CEO of the company himself, Alan B Gilman
Please join me in spreading the word & standing up for Karen and everyone else with a disability who wants a goddamn shake.

I encourage you stumble this post, as well as, theirs.  The more it gets spread around, the better chance she has in getting heard which will hopefully lead to an apology ASAP!

  1. OMG! This is outrageous. I posted about it as well, it’s amazing how stupid people can be.

Dillard’s here in our area had a similar problem when they asked a man with a service dog to leave the store. PR nightmare, I hope Steak & Shake realizes what they have done…

Melody’s last blog post..OMG!! I can’t beleive the nerve of some people!

  2. Stumbled! But we don’t have any of these down here. :duh:

And can you send me the link to the plugin you are using to display a commenter’s last blog post? That’s freaking cool! – Ah, forget it, I just scrolled down to hit submit and found it.

    *slips away feeling silly*

  4. We do not have any here. But I can not believe they would treat someone like that! That person should be fired on the spot. There is no excuse for being so rude, ignorant and stupid at the same time. I hope they give her apology.

  5. I really don’t believe it. What year is this? Now people can hopefully understand why I’m an advocate for people with disabilities.

  6. She should sue……it’s illegal!

  7. I think it is wrong that they didn’t server her, but on the same note.

Why would she want to go through the drive through if she can’t hear the speaker, doesn’t she know how much they screw up the orders of those of us that can hear the speakers?? Why not go in where you can talk to a real live person. I am pretty sure they weren’t denying service totally…. it seems dumb to try to force a company to do something that you can’t understand. It could be me though…

  8. [...] denied service from the drive through at her local Steak and Shake. I read about this story from Lori and am still incensed [...]

  9. I saw this on another blog that linked here. I don’t have a steak and shake near me but if I did I would be on board.

What that employee did was horrible and they should really be fired for it. What they did was illegal on so many levels

  10. to all the people that dont know the other side of the story the lady pulled up to the window and it doesnt alert employees when there is a car at the window the only time that an employee is alerted is when a car is at the speaker box by time an employee realized that the lady was at the window she refused to be helped

  11. I agree that what happened was unfortunate and really bad. However, it is not Steak n Shake that is the problem. It was just one disgruntled, egotistical employee. If the woman spoke to the manager and did not get an apology, then she spoke to corporate and did not get a response, then that is a bad company as a whole. However, this sounds like one bad employee having a bad day.

Also, I agree that the hearing impaired and deaf should have the same rights as everyone else. However, if you cannot use a system effectively (such as a drive thru) you are forced to use alternatives. If you are unable to order at the window, then you are putting a burden on the workers, and the customers behind you. I understand if you have never worked in fast food you may not understand. When I worked in fast food we were told never to take orders at the window. The reason is very simple. You are meant to order at the window. If you don’t order at the window, the car behind you starts to order while you are pulling around. As they order we enter it into the computer. As you pull around, their order comes up. It is not possible to ring your order up unless we delete the entire order of the customers behind you. Not only is this a huge convenience, it adds a lot of time to the efficiency of the drive thru making it inconvenient for other customers. In this story she stated a car was behind her. The boy acted rudely but she shouldn’t expect to have ADDITIONALLY rights for being hearing impaired. No one gets to order at the window. Have respect for other customers, go inside.

  12. Sorry, it’s late. I have a lot of typos.

    One:
You are meant to order at the speaker*
    Two:
    ADDITIONALLY=additional

  14. Please get over yourself people! It is not everyone else’s fault that you are deaf. Stop insisting on inconveniencing everyone else because you are too lazy to get out your car and come inside. Hello! it’s a frickin drive-thru! you have to communicate through a speaker but you are deaf! grow a brain

  15. First I want to apologize to the lady that was treated this way. I do work for SteakNShake and this is not our policy. We have a deaf lady that comes thru our drive thru often and she comes straight to the window with her order written down for us. Again I apologize to Karen for this happening to her. Sheila

  16. Great job ! Please add me on msn at juancarlo345@hotmail.com so we can chat together !!

  17. an apology? whats the point of that? what’s that going to do? not worth a boycott. i sympathize with the deaf woman, im deaf in one ear as well, but all the fuss over such an insignificant altercation is not worth it.. maybe she should file a lawsuit like everyone else in this country who thinks they were discriminated against does. next time go inside, then there will be no problem. again i do feel sorry for the woman, but she shouldn’t put herself in this type of situation in the first place, and just avoid the whole thing in the first place. whateva

  18. Steak and shake does cook to order, so being unable to communicate to the drive thru board would disrupt the service time one she got her car to the window. It would be necessary to pull forward after ordering and wait forward of the window for the prep time, plus in order to facilitate any cars behind her. Certainly can be managed, but does disrupt the system, which exists to keep service times reasonable to all customers. Unfortunatly, many people try to beat the system to their own advantage, possibly happened here. She needs to establish a system that works for her at that restaurant in advance. Then when she comes, she can pass up the drive thru and hand in a note, once she is familiar to the store, they will happily facilitate her.
