Follow Up on Steak n Shake Story and Response to Comment

I received a comment that disturbed me a bit on the original Steak n Shake post and felt like I needed to post about it instead of replying to her comment in the comments section.

Jennifer said this,

I think it is wrong that they didn't server her, but on the same note.

Why would she want to go through the drive through if she can't hear the speaker, doesn't she know how much they screw up the orders of those of us that can hear the speakers?? Why not go in where you can talk to a real live person. I am pretty sure they weren't denying service totally…. it seems dumb to try to force a company to do something that you can't understand. It could be me though…

Here is my response to you Jennifer, as well as, to any other folks who have this same way of thinking.

I think you’re missing the point.  She shouldn’t HAVE to go inside because of her disability.  In fact, had you read her story, she even told them..

“So I told him about the Americans with Disabilities Act and I explained that taking orders through the window is an accommodation that I need because I can’t use the speaker to place an order.”

Which gives her EVERY RIGHT to be served at the window

Maybe she didn’t want to get out for the same reason you don’t and you go through the drive through.  Maybe she was in a hurry and needed to get home, maybe…….oh wait!–She doesn’t need a reason.

I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be rude but this is pure ignorance.  It’s like saying that my brother-in-law (who happens to be in a wheel chair) should be denied library services because the book he wants is at the top of the shelf and he can’t reach it.

I’m happy to report that Karen’s story has made the news, in fact, she was interviewed by the ABC news.  Watch the video and see Steak n Shake’s statement. Maybe they’ll get her one of those Hilton Head rentals :D

Thanks Wendy for turning me on to the story in the first place.  I think a great lesson can be learned because of this incident.

The only disability in life, is a bad attitude!

  1. This quote I like: The only disability in life, is a bad attitude!

Sometimes people just don’t read the posts thoroughly before they comment.

  2. I don’t Think it would have hurt the Manager to have made her shake, what was the big deal? He really made a big deal out of nothing, he should have tolder her, “Okay mamm what can I get for you.” Who made the rule that you have to order at the speaker window anyway? It’s not written in stone anywhere. That manager was just really insensitive.

By they way I tagged you over at my blog!! It’s short and easy!! If ya want to do it.

  4. Now this takes the cake or should I say shake? “…it seems dumb to try to force a company to do something that you can’t understand…”

What didn’t she understand – how to order two shakes? She did understand it was the employee who didn’t understand or get it at all. And I don’t think that you get it either Jennifer. I feel sorry for you.

  5. First off wow! I get my own post…

I guess I don’t get it at all, why would you want to order at the window if you are using the drive through?? The dumb speaker box is what makes a drive through fast, so they can have your order ready by the time you get to the window. By using the window, you save no time basically and hold up all the people behind you who used the dumb speaker. It seems very inconsiderate to me.

I do think they should have taken the order and all that, so I am not totally disagreeing that there should have been service. My question is why would it be expected?

I guess for me personally, I hate drive up windows and rarely go through them, probably haven’t been through one in over a year. I choose walking in and looking the person in the eye everytime, they are about double as accurate with orders and it is much more personable.

It isn’t at all like denying someone at the library service because they are in a wheel chair. The library has librarians that are there to help everyone and wheel chairs don’t hold up anyone. The librarians are very helpful to everyone and will get books down even for people who can reach them.

This is all just crazy to me. It is a fuss about nothing.

  6. Jennifer,

It may seem like a fuss about nothing to you, but to me, it’s a violation of my civil rights. I have every right to access the same things that people with “normal” hearing do. I have done that many times before with other fast food establishments and have always gotten served. This was the first time that I was denied service because of my disability. And to discriminate like that is wrong.

  9. As someone who worked at a fast food place for two years I know that people withOUT hearing disabilities have trouble hearing thru the speaker. I’ve taken so many orders from the window when that’s happened – sure it slows down window time, but who cares? It’s a food place, it’s called CUSTOMER SERVICE! So, it should especially ESPECIALLY happen when someone with a disability comes through. She has every right to use the drive through as anyone else!

It’s not a “fuss” and should be “expected” because it’s their JOB as a person who works in the food SERVICE field.

Sorry, this kinda stuff just gets my goat. People seriously lack common sense and common courtesy nowadays.
