I couldn’t find my mamaw’s recipe but I think this one comes pretty dang close! I hope you enjoy because I just learned that my kids LOVED it so it is an official family favorite. These Thursday recipes are inspired by the “recipe roundup” over at Dinner Tonight from the Martha Stewart website!
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 pounds bacon, chopped
- 1/2 onion, chopped
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 3 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed
- 2 cans black eyed peas
PREPARATION:
Heat a large pot over medium-high heat. Add bacon, onion and garlic, and cook until browned. Gradually stir in the green beans, stirring to coat with bacon grease. Add black eyed peas. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 5-6 hours, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
Green beans, trimmed!

Bacon, onion, and garlic cooked together…

Beans added!

Viola!!! YUMMY!

Prep Time: 30min
Cook Time: 5-6hrs

Oh, those do look yummy. When I read the title I thought of what we always called Fried Green Beans. Basically they were just fresh green beans cooked in as little water as possible, then when they’re mostly done, you add some oil to the pan and cook them until they’re browned or blackened nicely. Yum!

These look fantastic, I have a theory that bacon added to anything makes it better and I am sure that this recipe will only prove my theory. I have always used a slab of salt pork with my green beans but this is a refreshing take on the recipe, I can’t wait to try this. Thanks so much.

Lori, thanks for this recipe. The only draw back on this is that the cooking time is so long.
