Four Eyes and a Smart Pig

I remember when I first got my glasses, 6th grade it was.  They were huge and very unpopular.  I also remember the doctor saying that if I wore them all the time, that I probably wouldn’t have to wear them as an adult.  What a crock.  Not only do I have to wear them, my eyes & astigmatism are so bad that even the Toric contact lenses are not strong enough.  *sigh*

I’ve decided to save for Lasik surgery.  I know tons of people who have had it and are so happy.  This is gonna sound silly I know but I’ve always wanted to wear shades and the be able to slide them to the top of my head while indoors.  It’s lame but it’s a small thing taken for granted by people that don’t have glasses or that can wear contact lenses.  My nose it tired of them too.  It’s tired of something weighing it down 24/7.  I want to exercise without my glasses bouncing everywhere and then sliding off from the sweat.  After over 20yrs, I would love to just not have to wear them anymore.

It can be hard to save for anything, especially something that’s not a necessity but a luxury item.  I don’t NEED it but God knows I WANT it badly.  Our bills are paid, kids have the things they want and need and we are okay financially so I figure now is as good as time as any to start saving for something big for myself.  This is where the pig comes into play.

SmartyPig is a place where you can open a savings account and create goals that you can share with the public or keep private.  By sharing with the public, your family or friends can make contributions to help you reach your goal.  I think this is very cool because I could just tell my parents to contribute to my goal instead of buying me something for my birthday.  You make an initial deposit (min of $25), then pick a day of the month for SmartyPig to withdraw from your funding source and deposit into your savings account.

MY GOALS

My savings goal is $3000.  I did the initial $25 and on the 10th of every month, I have it set to take out $58.  It’s not much but I plan to add funds with some bigger checks I’ll be getting in the future.  I hope to have enough by August at the latest but we’ll see I reckon.

So on the 10th, I will have $83, leaving $2917 to reach my goal. Wish me luck, lots of it please.

THE WIDGET

You can embed a widget into your site so that people can see your how close you are to reaching your goal, as well as contribute should they want to.  Very cool!  Here’s mine, which shows nothing yet since I just did it today and have to wait for the funds to transfer from my bank account.

Oh and yes I know that Surgery is misspelled. This is what happens when you multitask with a toddler on your lap. :/

It’s 3.05% APY and FDIC secured. They are on twitter, facebook and others. I really like how they do things, I like the way everything works and I’ll think I’ll be very happy with them while reaching my goals.

As always, do your research before opening an account with anyone.

If you have a public SmartyPig account, let me know your goals and how it’s going so far.

I’m right there with you. I want to be able to just pick up a pair of sunglasses and put them on without 1) them being prescription and very expensive and 2) not have to take off my other glasses and hope to remember them when I go indoors. Good luck with your savings goals!

  2. I was told the same thing – and like you, my eye sight is now so much worse.

Good luck in your goal :)

Great idea to goal set…sounds like there is a whole “new” you in the works…diet, exercise and now lasik. I wanted to let you know that it doesn’t work for everyone however. I had it done and the next day I could see, but I still had to wear glasses. It was amazing being able to see the alarm clock across the room without putting glasses on for a while though. My eyes steadily worsened again and my corneas were too thin to do surgery again. Two of my brothers had theirs done and have had NO problem with them..still glasses free! I was one of the ones they tell you about…just my luck!

I know you will love not wearing glasses though so I’ll keep you in my prayers for that. I love the idea of saving for it the way you are.

    Good luck!!

What a great thing to do for yourself! I’ve had some friends and family that have had the surgery and would recommend it to anyone!

Good luck with your savings! I’ve been wanting to have the Lasik surgery done as well. My brother and sister-in-law had it done with fantastic results!

So funny you say that… I wear my contacts so that I can wear shades so that I can drive or ride a bike or go flying. Otherwise, I have to wear my glasses, which I don’t mind, but they do get in the way of the shades. Sometimes… ((shhh))… on road trips… when I’m feeling really lazy… I’ll actually wear my shades over my glasses. It’s what I call my sexy look. LOL.

Good luck with your surgery and WOOT on the savings!!

I tell my husband that he should thank God every day that he can wake up and see everything clear right away. My habit of reaching for my glasses is a motor memory now. I’m dreaming of Lasik too.
