My Cowboy’s Slow Cooked Beans

My husband is a pretty great fella.  He’s always done more than what I think most husbands do and cooking is no exception.  He loves to cook breakfast for us and he loves to make his beans in the slow cooker.   We cook beans and tortillas quite often because it’s a filler and it’s cheap.   We use simple and few ingredients but it always turns out tasty.

You know, my husband taught me to cook a lot of things.  I was 16 when we first married and while I picked up a few things from my Mom, Grandma, and Mother-in-Law, it was my husband that helped me learn the basics.   Then next thing you know, we were working for a big ol’ ranch where I had to cook for 15-50 people!  My husband has always made our beans though. I’ve never had the touch I guess because mine always come out completely tasteless.  In fact, this is the first time he shared how he made them, which was super easy!   With the cooler days approaching, this will definitely warm the tummy!

Recipe: My Cowboy’s Slow Cooked Beans


  • 1 pound of pinto beans
  • 1 small can of tomato sauce
  • 1 can of Diced tomatoes with green peppers and onions
  • handful of Fiesta’s Pinto Bean Seasoning
  • 2-4 slices of cooked bacon
  • lots of salt


  1. My husband says to put the beans in your slow cooker first, adding the seasoning, salt, tomato sauce, and diced tomatoes next.
  2. Then add your bacon and plenty of water to cover.
  3. Cook 6-8 hours on high or 10-12 on low.

We mashed ours the other day to make refried beans to serve with our Barbacoa.  They were the best refried beans I’ve ever had!

    I make mine from a can. These sound delicious and I’ll have to try it. My mom used to make barbeque beans..I’ll have to drag out the recipe and post it as we loved them growing up and as I recall, they were pretty simple too (probably just “doctoring” up canned pork and beans as I recall).

    Yum, those look so good! I have a hard time with beans because no matter how I cook them they still are al dente. I’ll have to try your hubby’s recipe! My family loves beans and homemade tortillas, and you’re right, they are a cheap meal! Does Wal-Mart carry the pinto bean seasoning? I’ve never seen it, but never looked for it either. : )

    I love cooking my beans in the slow cooker, and these look amazing. Does he soak them at all, or just rinse and throw in? Also, I’ve always heard that tomatoes and tomato products prevent the beans from cooking so you shouldn’t add those until the end when the beans are already cooked. I guess that’s not true, because these look like they’re cooked just fine.

    I’ve never heard of that seasoning, but I’m going to have to look for it. These look so good!!

    This recipe is a lot different than how we make ours. We will have to try it. I have never seen pinto bean seasoning before. I am wondering if I will be able to find it here in MI. What does it have in it?

    That is very different than we southerners make. We call pinto beans “soup beans” and they are soaked overnight and then slow cooked with plenty of water covering them with either a ham bone or big slab of fatback. You can add onions. Then we serve them over crunchy tender cornbread and a side of white slaw.
    Yummy – cheap and healthy

    I have to try this! I usually just throw the beans in the pot with smoked meat… ham hocks or whatever with some lawry’s and pepper. The tomato sauce will aid with flavor. Mmm.

    I would try this recipe, It has been a long time since I have ate cooked beans because my mom gets annoyed that the beans are still hard or al dente, however, is it easy to find pinto beans seasoning?

    These look so good. I have had some of the seasoning in my cupboard for a while now and have not used it. I bought it thinking I would use it for beans and never have. After seeing this recipe I know I need to give it a try. Thanks for sharing it!

    I cook my pinto beans with a bunch of spices including minced onion & garlic.

    A tip my girlfriend gave me to make sure the beans cook fully is to add a pinch of baking soda. Works every time for me.

    This recipe looks so good! Gonna have to try it!

    I love all the Fiesta seasonings, the one for Mexican rice is great too. I use the pinto bean seasoning myself. Our water is so hard that we have to boil the beans with about 1/4 t. baking soda first for about a half hour to an hour, then dump the water and rinse them real good before the “real” cooking. I have a girl buddy who uses taco seasoning in her beans and they’re really good that way. My mama was from tennessee so I learned to cook them with ham hocks or salt meat.
