I had an interesting discussion with some folks the other night and one of the main topics that came up was, “How much would you sell your blog for?” One said $1500, one said $5000, and one said $5 million. It’s not only an interesting question, it’s a valid one because you never know who might offer you a good chunk of change for your blog. It happens all the time.
Back when I had Blogging with Cents and was in the Top 50 Money Making blogs…I was offered $6000. I turned it down. Big mistake now because I ended up letting it go due to blogger burnout but at the time, it was my baby. I was so proud to be a woman who was doing well in the affiliate marketing niche, that I just couldn’t let it go. I think about it all the time…what would I have taken for it? $10,000? I just don’t know and for most people, you won’t know until you’re offered something for it. You’re gut will play a big role in deciding, along with your heart and even your current financial situation.
Maybe the real question is, Would you sell your blog? I think some soul searching will be needed for that decision. Whether you might want to sell now or later, it’s good to have an idea of what your blog is worth. And if you’re saying, “but I don’t really make any money so it can’t be worth much”..well, maybe not right now but it could in the future..or someone could come along who NEEDS your domain. I think it’s a good idea to have some kind of marketing strategy for your blog, just.in.case.
OVER TO YOU
So WOULD you sell your blog, and if so, what number would hit the spot and make you grin? And I mean that as serious question. Maybe an interested buyer is watching this post right now. What is your bottom dollar that you would take for your blog and what is your ideal price?

Lori is the Owner and Founder of four blogs, a 4 year Problogger, a social media influencer, and tech nerd at heart. She's been married 18+ years and has 3 handsome boys; Tyler 17, Toby, 14, and Truett 4.

I think for $10,000 I would happily start from scratch. Any takers? ;)
I have three blogs. Two of them are personal blogs, and one is a weekend meme I created (Camera-Critters).
It would take a LOT for me to sell Camera-Critters… then again, I probably wouldn’t sell it. I created that meme from a simple idea – a love of critters and a love of photography. Then I built on that idea. The meme has become quite successful, and my participants continue to tell me how much they enjoy it, and they thank me for hosting it. That means a lot, and it makes me proud.
The other two blogs, the personal ones… to be honest, I’d probably sell them. I’ve been wanting to change the way I do those two blogs, but they already have a particular ‘way’ about them that people are used to, and I feel restricted in how I can change them. So, if I could make some much needed money (I work three jobs and we farm… so we can get by), then I would probably take the money, and then I would create a new blog and do it the way I want.
OK, sorry for the long comment – I tend to ramble.

Hmmm, I’m sure if the number was right I could probably sell it, maybe. I have no idea what that number would be though – but it would be in the 5 digits at minimum I’m sure because I really love my little blog :-)
10K sounds good. Woohoo! :)
Honestly? Not that my blog is worth it but, I would only sell any of my sites if it would pay off my house. I do this as a hobby and extra income. I imagine there are MANY people out there who would not be in the financial bind they are in if they did not have a housing payment :)

Okay all you $10k’ers… I’m here to tell you that you’re likely undervaluing your financial potential here. I personally know at least three people who sold their blogs for upwards closer to SIX figures. And they weren’t these huge blogging rockstars at the time, either. Blogging rockstars get way more than that.
Don’t underestimate yourselves!
Oops! Your form is a bit awkward… my last comment put my website and twitter ID in opposite places that I wanted them… sorry!

My blog is up for grabs, right, now! For $5000 only. :D
That’s a great topic!! I closed down my store Skimbaco.com last December and also got a few offers from people to buy it – I rather closed it than sold, because I felt the brand itself was more valuable that the site. Would I have needed the money? Yes, desperately. Would $10K make a difference in my family’s economics right now? Yes, very much so. But would I sell my blog for that? No way!! I have been building my brand for 3 years, and IF I would sell it, I would have to get three years’ annual salary and then some.
I like that you said that it’s good to have a marketing strategy for your blog – and I truly agree.
What are your goals with your blog? What if someday something else comes along – what will you do with your blog? It is good to have a plan where you would like to take your blog – or better yet, where you would like your blog to take you.

I’ve gotten a few emails asking if I would sell my site, and my immediate reaction is NOOOOO! I love what I do too much to let it go! I honestly don’t know what I’d do with myself (probably start all over again, LOL!) As far as an actual NUMBER though… I suppose I’d really have to think about it if it came to something worthy… like WELL into the thousands. My husband would probably ask me to take the cash & run :)

That’s such a timely question. A couple of months ago, I was considering selling the Mom in the City dot com domain and starting a new site. (Family, friends and readers talked me out of it – which made me happy.) Since I had the domain name for 4 ½ years, the minimum that I would have sold for would have been $27,000. It’s not because I think that my site is so super great…but the domain name is. (In my former life, I worked in investment banking – my minimum price really was a steal. There is so much that a huge company could do with it – subdomains, etc. )
Since my site is geared towards moms of young kids, I will probably sell it/start a new site in a few years when my youngest goes to school/my oldest hits the pre-teen years. The starting bid will be $50,000 by then. Smile.

I never thought about selling my blog. I would do it though, for the right price, especially if I got the kind of offer Lara is talking about. I can always start over with another idea and another blog.
Nope! We would never sell our blog. My sister and I have worked too hard on it! It’s definitely our baby!
Okay, after thinking more about this I’m wondering what does it mean to sell your blog? Do you lose the rights to everything you’ve written? Does the new owner keep the old posts? What does a new owner do with someone else’s blog. I’m just not creative enough to understand why someone would buy a blog, especially if there’s just one writer. Wouldn’t it change/lose something significant if the person writing it changed? Any examples of blogs that have been sold and how they evolved after that?

I think everyone has a price but I also agree with one writer who thought most bloggers undervalue their blog.
I’m a web developer by trade who just started food blogging this past year. I’ve been putting recipes online for 10 years, just not in a blog format so some of my time has been spent in transferring that data. If I put the same value on what I’ve done for myself that I would have charged a client; my blog is worth close to $15,000 just for setup, design, and content input. And I’m just starting! If you’ve been blogging for a couple of years…your content has a huge value; that’s why someone wants it in the first place and yes, I would expect they would have ownership rights of that content if they purchased the blog.
I agree with Tiffany…isn’t the blog a voice of the owner? I’ve seen a small shop I loved go out of business after a new owner bought it. Why? Well they didn’t bring in the same type of goods we had come to expect, decided to no longer offer flowers, the owner wasn’t as much fun, etc. Thinks it’s the same, what might have made it a great blog could easily be long in transition since the real value might be the personality behind it.
That is such a tough question. Financially, we’re in a terrible spot right now and it would be hard to turn down anything over 1,000. But emotionally, my blog is apart of me and my life, it would be like cutting off a pinky toe and handing it over. Not sure I could do it.

Would I sell any of my blogs? Yes… I have been thinking of selling 1 business (domain, brand, etc) and the blog that goes with it.. but not necessarily together. The struggle I have is how do you value it? For the other 2 blogs… most likely I would not. 1 is a personal blog and the other is where I store my recipes ;)
Oops! The form got me too…
I forgot to add the domains that I would be interested in letting go…

I didn’t even know people sold their blogs! Very interesting question and yes I would sell my non-business blog.

Good conversation! I’ve been working hard on my blog for over 18 months, but really, if the offer price was good, I would consider selling. The price would have to more than make up for any potential brand income in the years to come though. And I would quickly start another blog. (Maybe become a serial blog entrepreneur?)
I would sell Party Planning Professor as long as they continued to give ideas and not just push products. There is a little Madonna in me that would like to create and re-invent myself and my blog. I totally know that I am not the only party planner out there and that I could be the person to build from scratch and help the vision get started and someone else has the ability to keep it going. I am a good “make it happener”!!! I wish I could create more often.

Actually, this is a debate we are praying over right now. We’ve had an offer and are in the ‘What if?” phase. I already am syndicated out in a few places, and if one of them wanted to bring my blog under their fold and have me blog there for them, I might be willing to sell and take a salary/percentages. 100% depending on the site and if it fits my voice and niche without asking me to become something I’m not.
But end my blog altogether, walk away and do something else or start again? No, I don’t think I could do that. In fact, a good deal of panic rises up inside at that thought!
The thing that makes it most attractive to me is the ability to give someone else the administrative aspects to handle–all the coding errors, and tiny details that eat up so much time as your blog grows into something bigger!

Sorry, didn’t meant to upload a giant photo of myself. Thought that was the avatar upload….now you can see why I’d be thrilled to have someone else handle the technical aspects and let me just write!

I would say 2 million, that way I could pay off all my stuff and would be willing to start over on my blog. But I would still ahve a hard time selling.
At this point I would never sell my blog. My blog is too personal

Nope…no way could never sell my blog. If I had a blog in a different niche that didn’t have personal stuff…well then maybe so!
