My dad has always said that you should spend good money on shoes and a mattress because you’re gonna spend practically your whole life in them. Well, I’m gonna add a pillow to that saying too. I already don’t get a whole lot of sleep and especially don’t get a whole lot with my flat $10 one. I’ve been through a lot of pillows; A LOT. Mattress Giant sent a Tempur-Pedic Symphony pillow to try out. Now one of the things that I don’t particularly like about memory foam pillows is that many times they are much too firm for my taste but that was NOT the case with this pillow. It was actually quite soft. I slept with it all week and I have to say, it was pretty dang awesome. I was extremely surprised that I’d like it that much because I had preconceived feelings about these kinds of pillows going into it. My oldest son had slept with it for a few nights and loved it….and of course tried to steal it but he’s just gonna have to get his own because I have a new favorite pillow.
May is better sleep month and if y’all follow me on twitter or facebook, then you’ll know that I have gotten tons of sleep this month. I’m thinking that maybe after the past three years of hardcore blogging that I finally hit a wall and needed sleep. I have some tips to share on how YOU can get a better night’s sleep. These are tips I’ve learned over the years.
- Own a good pillow and mattress. Our mattress is pretty terrible actually and is well over 20 years old. We currently have a Tempur-Pedic topper to help make it a little more comfortable. I’m determined to get a new mattress one of these days but until then, I highly recommend one of those toppers.
- Tensing up. I know, sounds odd huh but I find that tensing parts of my body up and then a nice stretch helps me a lot..
- Have a routine. Now I don’t get a lot of sleep but I do tend to go to bed around the same time every evening for the most part and I always get up early. I find that if I sleep late, I actually feel worse…it’s like my body doesn’t know what to do with extra hours of sleep. Anyways, make a routine and try to stick with it.
- Of course avoid caffeine a few hours before bedtime. That doesn’t mean just soda y’all! That also includes chocolate which is a weakness of mine!
So because I’ve been getting a good night sleep, I want YOU to get a good night sleep too. Thanks to Mattress Giant, one winner will get their own Tempur-Pedic Symphony Pillow valued at about $100 bucks! I’m excited about the giveaway for you guys and even more excited that I’ll be building a long term relationship with these guys and hope to bring you even cooler giveaways down the road!

Since I am retired I pretty much set my own hours but always get my 7-8 a night and sometimes a nap thrown in when I feel the need. Actually I don’t watch daytime TV because there is nothing on worth watching then but do watch a few shows in the evening and Alton Brown’s Good Eats at 11:00PM then half an hour to do my tweeky things like washing up and moisturizing my dry skin then watch The Golden Girls from 12:00 to 1:00AM then join my cat Kitty Kitty (she was named by my 4 year old step grandson so not very original but it serves the purpose) in bed. Now how is that for excitement?

I am one of those people who rarely have difficulty falling asleep. I drink a cup of hot tea before bed. Once in bed, I typically fall asleep within 10-15 minutes (sometimes sooner). One thing I have learned is to go to bed when you are tired, don’t wait until later as forcing yourself to stay up ultimately makes it hard to fall asleep later.

I can’t go to sleep before I put my 14month old to sleep first. I tried the reading thing but the baby ends up eating the book. I tried giving bath before she goes to sleep but she ends up crying when she gets out. So my baby and I got into a habit of watching yo gabba gabba and we follow their advice of letting the wiggles out before going to sleep. Then we knock out.

My tip is to make sure that it is a comfortable temperature in your bedroom. Too hot is the worst, too cold is bad (but can be compensated for with blankets at least), and just right is, well, just right. Its worth it, imho, to get a window air conditioner if necessary or just put a bowl of ice under a fan, and/or get a small room heater. Laying down and being instantly comfortable with the temp and the bedding is hugely important! That being said, I’d love to try a memory foam pillow and see how it compares to me down filled one. Thanks!
Heather Curtis says
If my first attempt to go to bed doesn’t succeed, I’ll come out to the living room and watch late-night infomercials until I start getting too drowsy to keep my eyes open, then I’ll trek my sleepy self back to bed and sleep like a rock for the rest of the night. So my tip, infomercials! Also having a box fan on the “medium” setting (for light noise) helps.. but that is more my husband’s thing…. I’ve just grown accustomed to it.

When I took a class on stress reduction they taught us the deep breathing method for relaxation. Slowing inhale through your nose, and then slowly exhale through your mouth.
Because you are concentrating on your breathing, your mind is pretty empty except for that.
It’s a great way to clear your mind when you go to bed, so that you can fall asleep quicker!

I bought a Symphony pillow about a week ago and it feels NOTHING like the model in the store. The one in the store was so soft, like resting my head on a cloud. I was so excited about my pillow. That was short lived. My pillow is so hard and non-giving. It feels like a balloon after you put too much air in it. I called the Tempurpedic rep and they said that I have to “break it in.” Well, I’m not sure whose breaking who in. If anyone has ANY tips on how to break in my pillow, please let me know. I’m so disappointed. Oh, I’ve been sitting on the pillow, stepping on it with my feet, and that joker still puffs right back up…
