I received a comment that disturbed me a bit on the original Steak n Shake post and felt like I needed to post about it instead of replying to her comment in the comments section.

Jennifer said this,

I think it is wrong that they didn't server her, but on the same note.

Why would she want to go through the drive through if she can't hear the speaker, doesn't she know how much they screw up the orders of those of us that can hear the speakers?? Why not go in where you can talk to a real live person. I am pretty sure they weren't denying service totally…. it seems dumb to try to force a company to do something that you can't understand. It could be me though…

Here is my response to you Jennifer, as well as, to any other folks who have this same way of thinking.

I think you’re missing the point. She shouldn’t HAVE to go inside because of her disability. In fact, had you read her story, she even told them..

“So I told him about the Americans with Disabilities Act and I explained that taking orders through the window is an accommodation that I need because I can’t use the speaker to place an order.”

Which gives her EVERY RIGHT to be served at the window.

Maybe she didn’t want to get out for the same reason you don’t and you go through the drive through. Maybe she was in a hurry and needed to get home, maybe…….oh wait!–She doesn’t need a reason.

I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be rude but this is pure ignorance. It’s like saying that my brother-in-law (who happens to be in a wheel chair) should be denied library services because the book he wants is at the top of the shelf and he can’t reach it.

I’m happy to report that Karen’s story has made the news, in fact, she was interviewed by the ABC news. Watch the video and see Steak n Shake’s statement. Maybe they’ll get her one of those Hilton Head rentals :D

Thanks Wendy for turning me on to the story in the first place. I think a great lesson can be learned because of this incident.

The only disability in life, is a bad attitude!
