Tuesday's Tips – Time Savers

Today’s tips are random time savers.  They include everything from cooking to organizing.

  • Freezing bread cubes and crumbs: Take pieces of old bread, cut them into cubes for croutons or process into crumbs. Place in freezer bags and freeze until the next time you need them. This will save some preparation time.
  • Alphabetize your spices.  Sounds lame but it makes it much easier to find what you are looking for!
  • Mix up your pancake batter in your blender, then pour right out of your container onto the griddle.  You’ll have lump-free batter and lots less to clean up.
  • Don’t fry your bacon, cook it in the oven!  Just lay the slices on a cookie sheet and bake at  350 degrees until crisp and done.  Easy cleanup, too.
  • If you spill cooking oil on the floor or counter, sprinkle flour over it; wait a few minutes for it to absorb and wipe or sweep up.
  • Wash dishes while you cook.  I’m a firm believer in this one!!!
  • Always plan meals on a weekly basis. Take a shopping list to the store, that way you will stay on track and won’t forget anything.
  • Use appliances like crock pots, pressure cookers, electric knives, ect.
  • Buy pre-chopped onions and garlic. They’re more expensive, but the time you save on chopping is worth it.
  •  Fill your coffee pot with water and coffee the night before. I move slower in the morning so this does save me time.

i am going to have to disagree on the pre chopped onions and garlic. By doing this you loose the true flavor. I recommend a Garlic Press from Pampered Chef, I cannot live without it! (No I don’t sell for them… maybe I should.)

My husband does the cooking and my daughter the dishes, but I am going to mention the bacon in the oven to him. I make the coffee the night before. My coffee maker has an AUTO feature! WOOHOO! I love waking up and it’s already done!

My dad has always complained that washing dishes while cooking dinner isn’t hygenic. bah.
I’ve tried doing bacon in the oven, but it’s not quite crisp enough for me. Maybe I should try cooking a bit longer?

I learned the Bacon-in-the-oven thing from my husband – He learned it in the Navy. Works great, plus, we occasionally flavor our bacon – pepper or steak seasoning, YUM. He and my dad went so far as to sprinkle the bacon slices with different kinds of hot sauce, syrup and such one day and had a taste testing.

    Men are so weird.

i’m a HUGE fan of frozen chopped onions. i can’t tell a difference taste wise, and love throwing a bag in my chicken soup instead of spending a half hour crying like a baby.

also, try the shakeup pancakes. just add water, shake, and pour out of a mini milk carton. super easy and under $2!
