Author: Lori
  • 4 C flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 TBSP lard ( If you can't find lard then try Crisco)
  • 1 1/ C warm water
  • 6-8 C of vegetable oil
  • 1 bottle cinnamon sugar
  • 1 jar of honey
  1. Mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Add lard. Work in with hand.
  2. Mix in warm water. Mix with hands until the dough is smooth.
  3. Cover with dish towel and allow to sit for 20 minutes.
  4. Pour oil in deep fryer.
  5. Watch as the oil heats up to 375 degrees.
  6. While oil is heating...pull out your wooden cutting board.
  7. Cover the cutting board with flour.
  8. Roll out the dough with a floured rolling pin on the floured cutting board.
  9. Continue to roll until dough is ⅛ inch thick.
  10. With your pizza cutter, cut the dough into 5 inch squares.
  11. Fry until the first side is golden brown.
  12. Turn over and fry until the other side is also a golden brown.
  13. Place several paper towels on top of a dinner plate.
  14. As you pull out the sopapillas place them on the paper towels allowing them to soak up the extra grease.
  15. Flip on the other side to make sure all the grease is on the paper towel not on your so papilla.
  16. Using a salt shaker...fill it with cinnamon and white sugar.
  17. Shake to mix the cinnamon and sugar.
  18. Shake the mixture on the warm sopapilla or dip the warm sopapilla into honey. (I do both!)
