- 4 C flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 TBSP lard ( If you can't find lard then try Crisco)
- 1 1/ C warm water
- 6-8 C of vegetable oil
- 1 bottle cinnamon sugar
- 1 jar of honey
- Mix flour, baking powder, and salt together. Add lard. Work in with hand.
- Mix in warm water. Mix with hands until the dough is smooth.
- Cover with dish towel and allow to sit for 20 minutes.
- Pour oil in deep fryer.
- Watch as the oil heats up to 375 degrees.
- While oil is heating...pull out your wooden cutting board.
- Cover the cutting board with flour.
- Roll out the dough with a floured rolling pin on the floured cutting board.
- Continue to roll until dough is ⅛ inch thick.
- With your pizza cutter, cut the dough into 5 inch squares.
- Fry until the first side is golden brown.
- Turn over and fry until the other side is also a golden brown.
- Place several paper towels on top of a dinner plate.
- As you pull out the sopapillas place them on the paper towels allowing them to soak up the extra grease.
- Flip on the other side to make sure all the grease is on the paper towel not on your so papilla.
- Using a salt shaker...fill it with cinnamon and white sugar.
- Shake to mix the cinnamon and sugar.
- Shake the mixture on the warm sopapilla or dip the warm sopapilla into honey. (I do both!)
