By A Cowboy's Wife | December 6, 2010

Update: Giveaway is over but please check out the app!  Thanks!

Truett is finally getting to the age where he can help in the kitchen more and with the help of an iPad food app and some kid friendly recipes, we are sure to create some memories!

Celebrity Chef Marcus Samuelsson has added to the already large selection of recipes by creating exclusive recipe content for the fantastic iPad app, Big Fork Little Fork. It’s an Apple iPad app that provides tools for kids to get them excited about food and help create family meals. I personally love every single thing about this app. They did a great job with it and not only does it capture my eye, my son loves the photos and game. He likes to pick different recipes and just look at them and he loves the game.

I created a video to give you a quick look at it but some of the things that I love are:

  • Big photos
  • Clear, bold steps and ingredient list
  • Fun games to engage the kiddo and learn about food
  • Shopping List
  • Search
  • Extremely user friendly
  • Cool menu with photo icons
  • EASY recipes with nutritional information
  • Very cool videos (love the peeling vegetables one!!)

WIN AN IPAD!

To celebrate his efforts in creating these fabulous recipes, I’m giving away an iPad!  Thanks to Kraft Foods, I get to give you the chance to own one of the coolest gadgets around!  One winner will receive an Apple iPad 16GB, Wifi.

One lucky winner will win this fabulous iPad. I love mine and have no doubt that you will too!

I think something simple enough for a preschool aged child to be able to help out would be awesome like pics showing the measurements and the ingreadients as well as words for the mom or dad to help teach the child while doing something fun together.

My app would start with a term, you would input the term, a food item, them, chef, and then it would ask you more questions such as a certain course, other ingredients and it would eventually narrow down what you are looking for with options.

Like a choose your own adventure for food.

my ideal app would have things sorted by allergy – we have a dairy allergy here, but have friends with wheat, nuts, peanut, egg, soy, corn, etc. allergies – and trying to find recipes that match different combinations of allergies can be tricky.

  65. Brandi says

Although I don’t have an Iphone (or any “I” thing!), I think the ideal app would be one that has detailed recipes and includes a shopping list for that recipe — so that when you are in the grocery store you can just pull it up and see what you need to get! (There may already be an app for this, but remember, I am not a member of the “I” club yet) :)

I think the Big Fork/Little Fork app would be great! Especially if you have kids. It would be a great way to start teaching them how to cook and become familiar in the kitchen, as well as teaching them health and nutrition at the same time. Great idea, Kraft!! :)

I don’t even know if this is possible with the iPad but I’d love to have a food app that is voice controlled. This would be helpful while cooking so I wouldn’t have to touch it with food fingers.

My ideal food app gives me the recipe, then creates a grocery list, then links me to coupons and creates a list as well as the cost of the items based on where I normally shop. It allows me to choose stores based on what’s available in my zip and then does the pricing so I could cost compare a recipe at Walmart vs. a recipe at Kroger in terms of cost.

My ideal app would walk me thru each step – slowly and quite detailed.. since I am a beginner in the kitchen. :) When it comes to baking – blind fold me, I am up for the challenge. But cooking dinner – disaster every time. Luckily my fiance and son have been patient. Therefore, I need an app with video tutorials, pause button, audio, lots of pictures and measurements.. and maybe user gallery images to show that mine does not have to look as perfect as their images. I hate using cookbooks b/c I get SO frustrated seeing the beautiful creations! Is it ok if mine is a little lopsided? :)

I think we need a food app where you can input what meat you want to use and a few basic items and then it gives you a recipe. That would be awesome for us folks that live in BFE when we can’t just run to the store. Wouldn’t that be cool? LOL

  422. Teegan Briggs says

    December 10, 2010 at 11:26 pm

My ideal food/recipe app would, off the top of my head, have these features:

    – Able to use when you’re not connected to the Internet. I had a big problem with this when I still had an iPod Touch * it broke recently :( *. The apps I tried out wouldn’t let me re-check the ingredient list while I was at the grocery store, for example, because I wasn’t connected to the net.

    – Able to download new recipes right into the app from thousands of recipes while connected to the Internet.

    – While online, able to add recipes to your favorites without necessarily needing to download it to your device right then.

    – Able to rate/review/comment on each recipe while online…maybe even while offline and have the choice to sync your opinions when you’re online. Maybe you want to comment on it and keep it to yourself.

    – Some sort of social aspect. Add friends, message, etc. So you can email people if you’ve got a question or want to congratulate them on an awesome recipe!

    – Oooh this one is important: easy portion adjustment. Smart tool that automatically adjusts the ingredient amounts when you input the amount of servings you need.

    – Nutritional information is calculated based on ingredients and listed with every recipe.

  423. Teegan Briggs says

    December 10, 2010 at 11:27 pm

I absolutely love the bright colors and big pictures; it makes it so easy to see what you are looking for and what the actual meal would look like. I also appreciate the nutritional information as I do try to feed my family a balanced meal. My son likes to help cook meals with me, and I think this would be a tool he would be able to use easily. I would like a food app to help with allergies or illness needs.

An app that would also gauge my preschooler’s fickle mood!!! Since that probably hasn’t been developed yet, one that will give a good variety for little ones.
