Day 1 of Rattlesnake Hunting on the Ranch

By A Cowboy's Wife | March 5, 2009

If you don’t already know, I live in a town that is known for holding the Largest Rattlesnake Roundup and people from all over the world show up just to see these rattlers and perhaps even eat some!

We hunted today for a little bit, just me and the man so I’m sharing photos today instead of video.  Believe it or not, I’m actually way more scared of a bee than I am of a rattler.  For reals!

First we have to find dens and they are everywhere around here unfortunately. We took the 4-wheeler with a box attached to put the snakes in, some snake catchers and away we went. Looking along the little bank, we spot a snake……can you see him?
Rattlesnake

Then my man slowly reaches in there with catchers to grab him……very slowly….

Grabbing rattlesnake

Squeezing the catcher fast, he gets him……only, it’s NOT a rattlesnake! It’s just some old harmless snake so we let him go.

After hunting for awhile, we do find a few snakes and it’s time to transport them to the barrel where we hold them until it’s time for the roundup!

Here they are in the box we threw them in after catching them.

In the barrel, getting a sense of his surroundings and not happy.

I don’t know but there is nothing like the sound of a dozen rattlesnakes shaking those rattlers in a hollow metal barrel! CHILLING!! I can only imagine how it’s gonna sound when there’s 50!!

So until next time folks………………

I’m itching and twitching just reading this, and I’m not scared of snakes! I’m always the one going “no, just leave him alone!” Course, I’ve never come eye to eye with a rattler either, so maybe that explains it!

OMG! I am terrified of snakes, I don’t know how you do that. Those pictures are going to give me nightmares! haha please don’t be offended when I don’t look at the video. But good for you! I wish I wasn’t so scared. I didn’t use to be, I loved the 2 class pet snakes in 3rd grade, but when I was little I almost stepped on a cottonmouth and ever since then I have panic attacks when I see snakes, even at the zoo

Yikes Lori! I live in the desert but I try not to run into the snakes if I can help it. A baby rattler made its way into my sons class last year!! Thankfully an parent helper found it and not a 2nd grader. I am interested to follow this event with you and I am VERY glad you did not share a video with that noise! :-P

How brave are you!?! That is some amazing stuff, snakes creep me out and I couldn’t even look at the pictures without getting chills. We have alot of Rattlesnakes around our neck of the woods too. When I was young my little brother who was 9 at the time was bit by a rattler on his toe. He was in intensive care for 5 days and in the hospital for 10 (I’m pretty sure that was the amount of time). He had three times the normal dose of anti venom. Pretty scary times. God certainly spared his life! So as you can imagine they freak me out! My brother on the other hand is very fascinated with all snakes.
    Happy hunting!

I live on a ranch in the
Everglades and we have a good share of rattlers and cottonmouths…we don’t really have to hunt them…they slink around and hide beneath the bushes in front of the door. Freaks me out every time! Why do you have a roundup…just as an animal/reptile control issue? Great photos BTW!

Yes, it is for a control issue, otherwise we’d be swarming in them. Every year thousands of pounds of snakes are caught and turned in. It helps but there are still thousands out there!

      Thanks for stopping by!

I heard people do this for a hobby. Do you know of any people that would consider the task of helping a situation I have ? There must be a den nearby. Some people say the snakes try to avoid people.I would have to say otherwise. I would be glad to provide room, board, or anything for a person who arise to the occasion. I am so tired of jumping out of my socks in the summer in our yard ! Thank you for your remarkable courage and help.
