Elk in the Rolling Plains?

By A Cowboy's Wife | June 11, 2008

We’re driving down some dirt roads here by where we live, back roads that have been travelled by me and my man many times;)  Anyways, there’s one of those wildlife thingamajigs over there and we took the little man to see the elk.  It’s funny really, all those times where we used to live, I never got to see an elk up close.  Oh my husband did many times but not me.  Who’d a figured I’d have to come here to the rolling plains to see them!

These 3 convicts escaped their 15ft prison walls somehow.  I highly doubt that they jumped that fence, unless they, of course they have wings hidden under that fur.  Nope, we figure they must have gotten out through a water gap.  You know, it sure was hard not to pull out the ol’ 30/30 and get ourselves some free meat!  I wonder if they have term insurance?  No, not the elk silly!–the owners:)

“Ya’ll be still and maybe they won’t see us.”

I would have gotten out of the truck and stuck my lens through the fence but I was barefoot and there were lots of stickers, not that my feet would notice but you know…….

This is the Mac Daddy I figure.  I mean, he looks like a mac daddy don’t he?  Surely it’s not a Mac Mommy???  Do the girls get antlers?  LOL….pardon me while I Google that!

you are so lucky to have such great wildlife near you. Our best is a possum on the side of the road. But then again I live in the “big city” LOL

I just discovered your blog…great job. I will have to spend some time browsing through and catching up. I like the pictures of the elk. I have only seen them in the wild once. The racks on those males you photographed were pretty amazing. Can’t imagine carrying something like that around on my head all day!

Definitely no green whatsoever in West Texas! All brown:( I was so sick of having dirt for my yard!

The elk got my attention for a second but are you living near wind generators? How green is that?
