We are trying really hard to work on our eating habits. As ranchers, we are in full supply of beef but instead of finding healthy recipes to incorporate that beef, we end up eating chicken fried steak or something. It’s just how we live you know? My goal for this year and beyond, is to find more Healthy Recipes. Recipes that are budget friendly, easy to cook, and full of flavor.
I do have a few healthy beef recipes here at My Wooden Spoon that were really great and used lean cuts of beef; Asian Beef & Broccoli with Noodles and Beef Spring Rolls with Carrots and Cilantro were my faves.
This is where you come in. What healthy food staples do you keep in your kitchen at all times? I’m finding that I’m keeping a little more fresh produce of course, although it’s hard for me to do when I live a ways from town. It’s not often that I drive in so I can’t always keep fresh foods on hand. I do try to at least get a lot of apples. They last a long time and when we run of other fruit, at least we have those. I started buying whole wheat bread, which my kiddos really like. Speaking of kids, we chose to buy healthier cereal like Raisin Bran and Honey Bunches of Oats. Every little bit helps right?
And just because I want to eat healthier, doesn’t mean I’m ready to go to full blown healthy camp but I do think making subtle changes make big differences and easing my family into those newer eating habits is a work in progress.
Do you have any quick recipes you can share in the comments? I’d love any help I can get for whipping something up that is a little more body & budget friendly.

This looks so yummy! I’ve had something like this at Chili’s- oh yeah, baby, yummo!
Hi. I have a ton of recipes since cooking is one of our hobbies. I haven’t posted them all to my blog yet, but there are 4 you can try this week that you can find on my recipes page. I will be posting more in the next few weeks. We try to eat healthy so often our recipes are modified to be healthier if that appeals to you. Let me know what kinds of foods your family likes to eat and I can send you recipes that apply.
As far as staples, we keep a lot of dried beans, frozen veggies and fruit, and whole grains on hand.
As a fellow blogger, can I ask you something? I love you subscribe and follow widgets. Can you tell me where you got them?
Well good luck with everything.
We keep tons of fresh fruit, as it’s my son’s favorite thing ever. Our pantry is always stocked with pasta, black beans, canned tomatoes and Cheerios. In the fridge, we always have cheddar cheese, romaine lettuce, pickles and sweet peppers.
Stir-fry is a good way to use up whatever meat and veggies you happen to have and can be very healthy if you don’t use a ton of oil and sauce. I sprinkle mine with herbs and black pepper and splash on some olive oil and red wine vingar. Shish kebabs are also an unsung hero. SO good on the grill!
One thing I’ve found useful to keep in supply for a healthy option is frozen fruit. With summer approaching fast the frozen fruit is a great alternative to the sugar filled freeze pops we usually keep in the house. And you can add them into tea or lemonade instead of ice cubes for some fruity flavor.
On the lower end of the cost spectrum we always keep beans in the house and opt out of meat for dinner one night a week. A great bean recipe I like is:

We add avocado and other veggies and have tex mex salad that is very filling.
Good luck with the healthy changes, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a singe step” so every little change does help!
