Gardening Essentials for a Healthy and Beautiful Yard

By A Cowboy's Wife | April 27, 2015

Many of you spring clean your home but how many of you spring clean your yard?  We all do the mowing and weed eating but I’m talking about really tackling those weeds, caring for your plants & flowers, and making sure you have a healthy environment for your kiddos and animals to be.   I wanted to share some of my tips and essentials for having a healthy and beautiful yard!

Miracle Gro Potting Mix

REPLENISH THE NECESSITIES

Quality gardening gloves are recommended, especially if you plan on keeping them for the next season.  Either way, you’ll need to replenish a few of the basic necessities.

  • Gardening gloves
  • weed eater string
  • water hose gaskets (for the ones that didn’t survive the winter)
  • a few planter’s pots
  • potting soil mix (we prefer Miracle-Gro)
  • weed and feed (we prefer Scotts)
  • Roundup for those pesky weeds in sidewalks, around mailboxes, etc.
  • plant food (Miracle-Gro)
  • bird feed
  • Ortho for bugs & insects

Make sure all your gardening tools are sharp and ready to use, check your mower’s oil & fuel, and replace your weed eater’s string.  Mix up your plant food ahead of time. Fill your large container full of bird food and get ready to spring clean your yard!

WEED AND FEED

This is one of the first things that needs to be done y’all.  Rake up your yard and spread some weed and feed throughout.  We are partial to Scott’s brand products but whatever you use, make sure to read directions first.   Not all fertilizers are equal (another reason we stick with Scott’s), so it’s important to know what you’re spreading all over your yard.

ROUNDUP THE WEEDS AND SHOOT’EM

I was going for a cowboy thing there but what I mean, is use the Roundup weed & grass control to get rid of those weeds that have grown in the sidewalk cracks, around the mailbox,  on the fence line, in your mulch garden, etc.  It’s just pretty handy to be able to spray these areas.

ORTHO THOSE BUGS & INSECTS

My mom is finding that she doesn’t care too much for the bugs & insects we have in this part of Texas.  We do this year ’round but during Spring is when we really spray good everywhere.  She loves Ortho Home Defense for the house and the Bug Be Gon and Ant Killer for outside.

REPLACE, REPLANT

After you’ve done all this, you’ll want to replant any pots that need it.  Most shouldn’t if you’re using quality potting mix.  Don’t forget to use the plant food too!  Replace the water hose gaskets that might have cracked and will leak when you turn on that water hose, and fill your bird feeders.  I gotta say, I never thought I’d be a bird watcher at 39 years of age…….

When the Spring cleaning for your yard has been completed, you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy planting new things, watching the grass grow, and enjoying sitting outside and for us, the West Texas sunsets.

Remember to always read and follow label directions for the referenced products.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Scotts . The opinions and text are all mine.
