If you color your own icing, I’d really like to know how the heck to get a true blue icing, like the NY Giants color blue. I’ve tried about 3 times and still can’t seem to get it right. Colors I’m using are Wilton’s Royal Blue, Violet, with a touch a Black. Perhaps I should add even more Royal Blue? I was scared to keep adding more and more color for fear of making the icing taste like only coloring. The food coloring I have is in this set from Wilton:

And here are my cupcakes. By the way, I have not mastered the 3M swirl technique because I don’t make cupcakes often enough but am getting in the groove!

Okay, so tell me..what do you think I’m missing? It clearly needs to be a little darker yes??

You have to use a decent amount of royal blue. I usually do rainbow cupcakes, and use a lot less since most of the icing is still white.
It’s a pretty color, anyway. Maybe you could become a Seattle fan.
It is a pretty blue that you got. Personally, I am afraid to use blue food coloring. My first baby shower, my mom made a winnie the poo cake for my guests. Well she she used some blue food coloring that made everyone’s lips, teeth and tongue blue.
I’d love to help you but I can barely type through the tears…my plan was to make cupcakes with Kelly green icing for the Eagles but alas…

My Mom worked in a small town bakery for over forty years. When she wanted a darker color she just added more of the same color a tiny amount at the time until she got it right. But you can be assured it will turn every every thing it touches blue. Red is the same way. Maybe you can just use the blue color to decorate with. Write New York Giants and maybe some bats and ball on it. Giants? Bats and Balls or footballs or what ever they are. Sorry not a baseball fan not Pro Football either. I like college ball of any kind but love, love the girls games best.
add SPRINKLES!!!!!!! It takes care of all the problems in life =)
Lori, I found a good recommendation for how to do it here:

Good luck!
you have to use americolor. it’s much much much better than wilton. http://www.americolorcorp.com/
I have navy blue icing color and probably several other blue shades. I probably have 45-50 icing colors and have picked most of them up at cake decorating supply stores. If you plan on making more navy blue icing in the future, it might be worth your time to look online for a source of navy blue icing color or a cake specialty shop.
Good Luck!
Hi! I second Americolor. If you are unable to get that at a local cake shop or don’t want to order it online, I will be happy to send you some to try it. I have two great cake shops nearby. Sometimes online you can get a great deal on an Americolor kit.
I also recommend these two sites to you: cakecentral.com and cakejournal.com
Louise (cakejournal.com) is very helpful and even has a color chart she shared-mostly in pastels, though. http://www.cakejournal.com/archives/my-favourite-food-colors#
You can contact her here: http://www.cakejournal.com/contact-me
Good luck and please post your results when you achieve that deep royal blue!

For darker blue you might want to start with darker icing – like chocolate icing. I had this same problem, I used too much food coloring to achieve the color that I wanted — my icing turned out with a bitter taste.
I now start/use chocolate icing to achieve my darker colors — worked for me.
Add a little black at a time until it’s darker. Remember, it’s easier to add more than to remove it, so go easy on the black. Add a touch and then mix well. If you need more keep adding a touch at a time and mixing.
