We knew when we got this house, that tons of home renovations were needed. While we aren’t super ‘handy’, we aren’t scared to try tackling projects. With that said, there are something you just need to hire someone to do. One of them? Plumbing. Before I get to that though, let me tell you about how we got to that point….
Our first home improvement project was a bathroom overhaul. We still aren’t done but I’m gonna catch you all up on where we are now. Most of the rooms in our house are ‘lipstick and rouge’. They just need cleaning, repainting, etc. Nothing too major. Well, we need new windows and doors too. But the bathroom? Oh man. It’s a whole ‘nuther story!
One of our worries was mold so we started by tearing things out. See all that black? We thought that was the mold but come to find out, whoever did it, used black caulking. Yeah, that’s what I thought too. Who does that? What we tore out included the laminated flooring, a wall of sheetrock, the tub top, and the sink. The tub stayed because it’s cast iron. It looks dirty but hoping we can clean it up. If not, we’re gonna use one of those kits to redo it. We hear they work great but I don’t know. Do y’all?
Three reason we decided to tear that one wall down; 1) check for mold 2) we’d need it opened up to redo the shower pipe because it currently sits on the outside of wall (see second pic at top) and 3) check the plumbing.
I’m not gonna lie, the demolition part is fun, with the exception of cleaning it all up of course. Truett even got in there and tore down pieces of the wall! Once we got everything out, we got to see the rotted boards the toilet sat on and the corroded pipes that when trying to take a piece off, broke.
As you can see, it’s a HUGE mess. There’s all kinds of crazy going on in there and we decided it was best to call a plumber……and that my friends, is to be continued in the next post but you should see the difference in the plumbing supplies we used.
OMGoodness—we will be doing this this year! We bought our small older home, a great downsize, two years ago. The kitchen was a complete gut and re-do–lots of work–.plumbing, electrical, walls—everything The other rooms are, like you say, “lipstick and rouge”–fresh paint, a few odds and ends. All of that is now down to a bit of trim and decorating. Now—The Bathroom! It’s horrible! We’ve gotten by, because it is at least functional….but that is the best I can say about it. By late Spring we should be able to tackle a complete re-do…everything goes! I’ll be looking forward to watching your progress.
