Whether you love to DIY lip balm and/or soap or you know someone who does, I’ve compiled some of the most popular DIY gift ideas to make your shopping for soap and lip balm easier!
Every year, I have a sweet friend who practically begs me to make my lip balm recipe for her and her daughters. I use only the best essential oils in them and 4 other ingredients. One difference between mine and the store type lip balm is that I use less beeswax so it doesn’t feel like wax on the lips. That also means that it’s not so great in the summer because it melts easier. You definitely don’t want it to get too warm. That’s also why you don’t need to press it hard against your lips. The slightest swipe across them is enough.
I also love to DIY soap bars, the simple way! Soap can be easy or a little more complicated. I’ll include tools for both!
LIP BALM TOOLS and SUPPLIES
If you’re looking for a great kit with all the tools needed to get started right away, check out this Lip Balm Kit with tubes, stickers, and a tray to pour into tubes!
I use white or clear tubes because I like to make my own labels and would prefer a neutral cap. Here are some that I recommend! 50 Clear Lip Balm Tubes
Now I don’t use a tray like the one in the kit (but I do have one). Instead, I save and use my 18ct egg crates. If you go to my lip balm recipe, you’ll see what I mean. So if you’re gonna use something like that, then you’ll need a way to pour and I always use my Pyrex measuring cup. A simple 1-cup will work!
What I love is that you can play around with the recipe and decide what your preferences are. I use Unrefined Raw Shea Butter in this form. I have found that it works best.
There are several great coconut oils that you can use but I use Nutiva Unrefined Coconut Oil. I’ve been using it for the past few years!
Vitamin E Oil – It only takes a small amount but has a big, moisturizing impact!
You can’t have lip balm without the Beeswax! I recommend White Beeswax Pastilles Beads, Pure and Prime Grade 100%.
DIY SOAP TOOLS AND SUPPLIES
You MUST have silicone molds and y’all, I could go CRAZY over all the fun silicone molds out there! I use the silicone molds in the photo but also have some decorative molds that I love! You can buy so many different ones for different themes or seasons. It’s easy to hoard them!
If you’re wanting to soap making to be easy, then I highly recommend Goats Milk Suspension Soap Base. The reason people will use this is so that they don’t have to mess with Lye when making it the other way. There are several methods and you’ll have to decide which one you prefer.
When you’re making soap with Lye, you’ll need to measure everything carefully. You can be sure you’re getting accurate measurements, to the ounce, with this digital food scale.
Having a Braun Hand Mixer (Immersion blender) is super handy when making soap.
Olive oil is an ingredient you’ll need if you’re not using the melt and pour kind of soap base. Organic Extra Virgin Olive makes a softer soap but is also a little more pricey. Try a couple out and see if you notice a big difference.
You can’t make hot press soap without Lye. It’s important to wear gloves and safety goggles when working with Lye.
Finally, you’ll need a slow-cooker to make hot process soap. They’re cheap enough these days. You might even check your local goodwill if you don’t already own one.
Like I briefly mentioned above, I ONLY use Young Living Essential Oils and have for the past 8 years. I always add them to my lip balms and soap. They are the only company with the Seed to Seal guarantee!
