Last summer when we moved my mom from Houston, to dry ol’ West Texas, I made her yard a priority. She has two beloved dachshunds that are like her children and it was important that they had a healthy yard to run around in. After all, the move was an adjustment on them too.

My dad was so knowledgeable with taking care of the yard, plants, and trees and I wanted her to have a little something that would remind her of her old home, so I took the steps to get her yard prepared. If we’re friends on facebook, then you know just how much work we put into fixing up her yard. It was time to plant and my mom loves flowers and knows a whole lot more than I do so I followed her lead. Real quick, though, I want you to see how her yard looked before we used Scotts Turf Builder Weed & Feed.

As you can see it was pretty bare and super crunchy. These poor baby dogs didn’t have any grass and Katie loves to sunbathe! We also used some Roundup Ready-To-Use Weed & Grass Killer III and Ortho Bug B Gon because my mom does NOT like bugs, especially the kind we have here in West Texas. We killed weeds, planted grass, and fed it with Scotts Green Max Lawn Food.

We did all that summer of 2014 and by this summer, we had green grass everywhere, a whole lot less weeds, and were ready to plant some flowers! Thank goodness for strong sons!

My mom only buys the best potting soil too y’all…Miracle Gro Potting Mix, of course. So we bought several giant bags of the potting mix and got busy. Here are two areas we planted flowers.

and our latest project was filling these barrels up!

I figure it will take another year or two for all the weeds to be overgrown with lush green grass and if we keep getting all this rain like we have, maybe even sooner! We’ll just keep laying down our weed & feed and just taking care of the yard like we have been. If you need tips on creating a healthy, beautiful yard, or just wanna express yourself through lawn & garden, I’d love to know what all you do and what your favorite flowers are!
